There's a good reason that Alpha Strike exists, and why fan projects like "Battletech: Destiny" have taken form. It's a very, very particular kind of enjoyment, to the extent that I think many people who enjoy Battletech might enjoy another, lighter game more (again, not an insult, just that Battletech is to wargaming what nattÅ is to beans). Battletech lies at a pretty extreme end of both of these scales, so suffice it to say it's not for everyone. People who really enjoy simulationist tabletop games often report that being forced to individually account for each special rule helps them imagine the story unfolding, and as a result aren't put off by the required bookkeeping. It's a very obsessive kind of attention to minutiae that rubs some people right, like the satisfaction of perfectly alphabetizing a card collection or meticulously checking over a program you've written. There's no accounting for taste some people find a quiet sort of enjoyment in the methodical bookkeeping that goes into this kind of game. Here I'm not intending to ding people who enjoy this kind of convolution, either. Infinity is a very, very dense game with tons of important rules as well, but is significantly less convoluted. Warhammer 40,000 has more individual special rules, sure, but the basic functioning (while still incredibly cumbersome) has less mechanical complexity. I don't know that I can think of a currently produced miniatures wargame more complicated than Battletech off the top of my head. Folks often forget to take this context into account when discussing game weight, I suspect partially because games rooted in their designs from the 80s are some of the only games people have played. If we're to compare it to other games, especially modern ones, it's extraordinarily heavy.
